Primary Research Interest
Dr. Stewart is currently working on three lines of research:
Hematology / Hemostasis Clinical Laboratory Testing Initiatives. As a collaborator and research assistant to the medical hemostasis department at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, I have been able to conduct research on best practice testing for children with Lupus Erythematosus and Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. The research on these initiatives have been published and presented at the national level.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Technology and Student Success. I value the importance of student success. As a continuation of my doctoral degree, I feel it is important to understand the needs of today’s student and be able to enhance their learning capabilities. I will publish on the ways in which technology has enhanced learning in a classroom setting by using tools such as Kahoot, hands-on and virtual simulations. This research has secured an internal FRAP grant within the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Faculty Support. Exploring the scholarship of teaching and learning in regards to faculty support is vital to the success of each program within the university. Transitioning from a clinical practitioner to an educator in the health sciences is a difficult task for many professionals. Although, clinically, these individuals have achieved a level of expertise, they are not necessarily trained to teach in a classroom setting and may find it difficult to transition into their role as novice. The purpose of this research was to examine faculty members’ preparedness during their transition to academia and their perceptions of the need for more support during the first years and beyond of teaching. I have collaborated in multiple health related disciplines at WSU and plan to further this research to the national level as I have begun to present nationally about faculty support, as this is a continuation of my dissertation work.
