Distinguished Professor– WSU Applebaum and VA Senior Research Career Scientist
Dr. Anjan Kowluru is a Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the EACPHS. He holds a joint appointment as a Senior Research Career Scientist and Chief of Diabetes Research Laboratory at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. He served as the Director of Research, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2004-11), the Associate Dean for External Scientific Affairs (2012-17) and the Associate Dean for Research (2023-24) in this College. He is a member (and past President) of WSU-Academy of Scholars. He is a member of the Elizabeth Weiser Caswell Diabetes Institute, University of Michigan. He holds an Adjunct Professor appointment at Curtin University (Perth, Western Australia). Dr. Kowluru was a Visiting Professor at several international institutions, including the University of Keele (UK); the National University of Singapore; the University of Dundee (UK); and the Science and Technology Research Academy (India). Prior to assuming his current position at WSU, he held appointments in the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, Madison, WI; Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos NM; and Brussels Free University School of Medicine, Brussels, Belgium.
Dr. Kowluru’s current research is focused on understanding pathophysiology of islet dysfunction in diabetes. He has published 195 papers, review articles and book chapters, and presented more than 330 papers in regional, national, and international meetings. His research (past and present) is supported by VA, NIH, ADA, and JDRF. He mentored more than 120 researchers at various levels, including MS/PhD students, PharmD Research Scholars, Post-Doctoral Fellows, Clinician Scientists and Junior Faculty. He also served as an Academic Advisor to more than 65 PharmD students. He provides didactic instruction in graduate and PharmD programs in the EACPHS.
Dr. Kowluru has served on numerous scientific review panels at the national and the international (Australia, Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, UAE and UK) levels. He has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and a member of numerous professional societies. He was a member of the DEI Taskforce of the American Society of Cell Biology, and the American Diabetes Association Islet Biology, Development, and Function Interest Group Leadership Team. He received multiple awards from WSU, including the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award, the Board of Governors Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellowship, and the WSU Distinguished Professor, and the Department of VA’s Senior Research Career Scientist Award.
