Q: Why did you choose Wayne State?
Wayne State's Detroit location played a pivotal role in shaping my educational experience. The city's diverse population and the array of challenges faced by its residents allowed me to witness a broad spectrum of cases and scenarios. The exposure to a wide range of real-world situations in Detroit was invaluable in preparing me for the dynamic and ever-evolving field of pediatric occupational therapy.
Training in Detroit meant encountering a diverse mix of cases, from socioeconomic challenges to various cultural backgrounds, providing a rich tapestry of experiences. The program's emphasis on hands-on learning in this urban setting equipped me with practical skills that extend beyond textbook knowledge. The belief that if you can successfully navigate and provide therapy in Detroit, you can excel as a therapist anywhere, became ingrained in my training.
This real-world emphasis not only made my education at Wayne State more challenging but also incredibly rewarding. It allowed me to develop a deep understanding of the complexities and nuances of occupational therapy in diverse and often demanding environments. As a result, I am confident that the training I received at Wayne State has uniquely prepared me to be a highly effective and adaptable pediatric occupational therapist, capable of making a positive impact wherever my career may take me.
Q: What inspired you to pursue OT?
A: My inspiration for entering the field of pediatric occupational therapy goes beyond a simple career choice; it's rooted in a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of supportive services and love. Early on, I recognized the profound impact that these elements can have on individuals, and this realization became the catalyst for my career path. What became unmistakably clear to me was that my true calling lay in working with individuals to help them pursue what they love in life and strive towards the most fulfilling existence possible.
Choosing to focus on pediatric occupational therapy added a layer of significance to my journey. The innocence, genuine love and unfiltered joy that children exude became a powerful motivator for me. Working with children not only deepened my passion for the field but also enhanced my understanding of the pure resilience and untapped potential that exists within every young individual.
Witnessing the positive changes and milestones achieved by children through therapy reinforced my belief in the importance of this profession. It's not just about addressing physical or developmental challenges; it's about fostering an environment where children can flourish emotionally, socially and physically.
In essence, my inspiration to become a pediatric occupational therapist is grounded in the joy of facilitating growth, supporting dreams and being a guiding force in the lives of these young individuals as they navigate the world with wide-eyed wonder and boundless potential.
Q: Who was your most memorable instructor?
A: Dr. Doreen Head stands out, leaving an indelible mark on my academic journey. One of the most valuable lessons I learned from Dr. Head was the importance of individuality in our approach to occupational therapy. This approach emphasized that our unique qualities could enhance the therapeutic process, fostering a more personalized and effective connection with our clients.
What truly set Dr. Head apart was her dedication to mentorship. Dr. Head remained a steadfast presence in our lives. Her resilience and commitment to teaching were inspirational. Dr. Head's unwavering support for her students highlighted the depth of her compassion and the unconditional commitment to our growth and well-being.

Q: Looking back since graduation, what are some of your highlights?
A: A defining moment in my career was the establishment of Rise Children's Center, a venture that stemmed from a deep conviction that I could make a more profound impact beyond individual consultations. Taking a leap of faith, I founded the center with the belief that a dedicated space could serve as a hub for transformative pediatric occupational therapy, reaching and benefiting a broader spectrum of children and families in the community.
The decision to create Rise Children's Center was driven by a vision of comprehensive and accessible care, where the collective efforts of a team could magnify the positive outcomes for children facing various challenges. I recognized that by creating a specialized center, we could offer a continuum of services, ranging from early intervention to ongoing support, addressing the diverse needs of children as they navigate developmental milestones.
