Toni Benson
RADIATION THERAPY TECHNOLOGY
Graduated in 1982
Q: What inspired you to pursue Radiation Therapy Technology?
A: My mother and the program director inspired me to try this profession.
Q: Who was your most memorable instructor?
A: My physics professor. He was really nice and I thought he was the most intelligent man on earth. He was handsome for an older gentleman. (I think I had a secret crush on him.)
Q: What was your most challenging class?
A: Physics! However, the professor broke it all down to where I could understand it. He was very encouraging. Because of that, I managed to get good grades.
Q: Did you have a favorite hangout on campus?
A: Purdy Library and a very good Greek restaurant on Cass.
Q: Share some reflections about your time at Wayne State:
A: Sometimes it was very challenging due to not having a car. Many times I had to take the bus or ride with two other students to get to clinic from campus.
Q: Share a career highlight or summary:
A: Out of 38 years, there have been so many wonderful highlights involving patients and coworkers that I just can't tell it all. I just feel very grateful and blessed.
Radiation therapists have a unique opportunity to blend the knowledge and skills of mathematics, science and psychology in their daily work. Radiation therapists operate sophisticated radiation equipment to treat malignant tissue, assist in designing cancer treatment through the use of 3D computer-generated calculations, recognize when a patient is having additional medical problems that require a doctor’s attention and provide psychological support for patients who are dealing with the stress of their illness. The bachelor of science in Radiation Therapy Technology is offered through Wayne State’s Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with an application deadline of Nov. 30.
