RADIATION THERAPY TECHNOLOGY

Graduated in 1983

Q: Why did you choose WSU?

A: There were several factors that played a part in my decision to attend Wayne State. First, it was local, which made it possible for me to keep my job while in school. Next, I was fortunate to have been offered a merit scholarship to attend. Additionally, Wayne State was one of only a couple schools nationwide that offered a Radiation Therapy program. The decision was easy!

Q: What inspired you to pursue Radiation Therapy Technology?

A: The desire to have an impact on fighting cancer.

Q: Who was your most memorable instructor?

A: Colin Orton. He made radiobiology interesting and fun!

Q: What was your most challenging class?

A: A couple of the early prerequisites that were not in my areas of interest. Also, there was a lab that had “practicals” for exams, and it was very competitive.

Q: In your opinion, what is one of the biggest changes that has occurred in your profession since graduating?

A: Massive changes every five years or so. Since it’s been 40 years since I have graduated, there has been a lot of change!

Q: How has your career gone?

A: I’ve enjoyed it. My coworkers everywhere have been fantastic. I’ve worked with some of the best!

Radiation therapists have a unique opportunity to blend the knowledge and skills of mathematics, science and psychology in their daily work. Radiation therapists operate sophisticated radiation equipment to treat malignant tissue, assist in designing cancer treatment through the use of 3D computer-generated calculations, recognize when a patient is having additional medical problems that require a doctor’s attention and provide psychological support for patients who are dealing with the stress of their illness. The bachelor of science in Radiation Therapy Technology is offered through Wayne State’s Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with an application deadline of Nov. 30
