Arab American Pharmacists Honor Dean and Pharmacy Faculty
Howard J. Normile, PhD, interim dean for the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (EACPHS), Wayne State University (WSU), and EACPHS faculty members David Bach, PharmD, and Linda A. Jaber, PharmD, were honored at the Arab American Pharmacist Association (AAPA) annual awards and scholarship dinner, March 27.
Dr. Normile was the recipient of the Outstanding Academic Partner Award for his efforts in creating an endowment to support pharmacy student education. Dr. Bach and Dr. Jaber received Awards of Excellence for their contributions and leadership in promoting the principle of public health relative to pharmacy.
Prior to his appointment as Interim Dean of the College in May 2008, Dr. Normile served as EACPHS associate dean. He has had a long association with Wayne State beginning in 1974 as a graduate student in the School of Medicine and has held a number of WSU positions including chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies. Dr. Normile is well-published on research studies relating to animal models of age-related memory deficits. He also has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, Alzheimer's Association, and many other funding institutions. He currently serves as member on the board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, the Accreditation Committee for the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions, and the Radiologist Assistants Advisory Committee for Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit.
Dr. Bach is an associate professor in the EACPHS Department of Pharmacy Practice, system executive director for the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) Pharmacy Services, and director of Pharmacy for Detroit Receiving Hospital and DMC Surgery Hospital. He has been involved in numerous professional organizations throughout his career. Dr. Bach has served as president of the WSU Pharmacy Alumni Association, president of the Wayne County Pharmacists Association, treasurer and president of the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists and president of the Michigan Society of Health-Systems Pharmacist. In 2002, Dr. Bach was acknowledged as a Fellow in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. He currently serves as chair for the Michigan Board of Pharmacy.
Dr. Jaber is an associate professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Long involved in the study of diabetes, her research focuses on determining response difference in patients with type 2 diabetes to chronic hypoglycemic agents. Currently, she serves as the principal investigator in a two-year National Institutes of Health funded research study examining the feasibility of diabetes prevention in the Arab American Community. She is well-published in clinical pharmacology literature and has made numerous scientific presentations on diabetes at local and national meetings. She is a past recipient of the Excellence in Research Award from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation. Dr. Jaber is a member of the American Diabetes Association, and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. She also serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy.
