CLS students visit Beckman-Coulter instrumentation trailer

Students in the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Clinical Laboratory Science program participated in a field trip to the Beckman-Coulter instrumentation trailer on June 14, 2022.

"This experience enabled our CLS students to get a glimpse into chemistry, immunoassay, hematology and urinalysis automation that is available in hospitals today," said Assistant Clinical Professor MaryAnne Stewart, who organized the demonstration.

Territory Sales Executive Mark Brown and Michelle Woodrow of the Beckman-Coulter team demonstrated the functionality of the instrumentation, then the students got a chance to explore, as well as review lab results and images on each of the analyzers.

"Currently, the CLS students have performed these tests using manual methods. Seeing how these processes have been automated only enhances the patient care experience," Stewart said. "Mark and Michelle were excited to welcome these future clinical laboratory scientists on board and introduce them to some of the instruments they may encounter when they start working in the lab."

Clinical laboratory scientists work behind the scenes to provide critical information to doctors through medical tests. In fact, lab results inform more than 70% of diagnoses, allowing doctors to tailor treatment plans and therapies to each patient. Clinical laboratory scientists may also pursue careers in medical information systems technology, research and design new testing methods, or go on to medical school.

The bachelor of science in Clinical Laboratory Science is offered through Wayne State's Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences with an application deadline of May 1. WSU Applebaum information meetings for prospective students take place online at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.
