All P1 and P2 PharmD students are strongly encouraged to join the Student Pharmacist Learning Community (SPLC), offered by the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to optimize student success during their first two years of their professional program.

The learning community is operated by P3 PharmD students chosen for their academic, professional and leadership abilities. This year's peer mentors are Josephine Cipriano, Mirna Eshaya and Jackie Fleury. SPLC coordinators are Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice Victoria Tutag Lehr and Pharmacy Department Education Specialist Sarah Kosel Agnihotri.

Beginning Sept. 6, peer mentors are holding weekly in-person office hours in room 235 (which is in the back hallway of the lower level) during the organizational hour. Individual mentor weekly schedules will be sent to students' WSU email accounts and posted on the Learning Community Canvas site. There also are Synthesizing for Success sessions targeting specific courses, as detailed below.

Learning community mentors are trained by Wayne State's Academic Success Center and the WSU Applebaum Pharmacy Department's educational specialists. These high-achieving P3 students are committed to serve as peer resources about the program and the pharmacy profession, including assisting P1s and P2s with study skills, strategies for selecting professional organizations and leadership experiences, and general information on balancing the demands of the program with their personal and social lives.

The learning community also hosts extra review sessions prior to exams. The SPLC program has been in operation since 2009 and evolves over time to best meet students' needs. Support is provided by the WSU Applebaum Department of Pharmacy Practice, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Dean's Office.

All first- and second-year students should plan to attend the Student Pharmacist Learning Community Orientation in the WSU Applebaum auditorium from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22. Watch your inbox for an invitation reminder.
