ONLINE ONLY: March 17 pharmacy CE session covers controlled substances
The Wayne State University Department of Pharmacy Practice is presenting a Continuing Education session titled "Controlled Substances: Limiting Risk, Maximizing Benefit" on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, from 6-7 p.m. In an effort to adhere to the CDC's social distancing guidelines for COVID-19, this event will now be streamed online. There will not be an in-person event.
System requirements to access online stream
Any health care professional seeking a controlled substance license in Michigan after September 1, 2019, is required to complete a one-time training covering a variety of opioid-related topics per the Michigan Board of Pharmacy. This session is intended to fulfill the training requirement for pharmacists seeking to obtain a controlled substance license. It is free for pharmacy faculty and preceptors, pharmacists, techs and student pharmacists.

Pharmacists, technicians, and student pharmacists are welcome. Pharmacists and technicians are eligible to earn 1.0 contact hours for attendance at this knowledge-based CPE activity.
Pharmacist objectives:
- Describe state and federal laws pertaining to prescribing and dispensing controlled substances
- Identify opportunities to improve safety on controlled substances and communication techniques surrounding the effects and risks associated with their use
- Discuss alternative treatments for pain management, integration of treatments, and medication-assisted therapy
Technician objectives:
- Describe state and federal laws pertaining to prescribing and dispensing controlled substances
- List alternative treatments for pain management, integration of treatments, and medication-assisted therapy

The Detroit Medical Center Department of Pharmacy Services is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who attend the program, submit a completed record of program attendance and evaluation forms, and provide their NABP e-Profile number and four-digit birthdate will be awarded 1 hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credit.
