Past pharmacy chair awarded 'emeritus' status

Wayne State University has awarded "emeritus" status to retired Prof. David J. Edwards, PharmD, former chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He retired from the college in June 2011 after 28 years on the faculty.

The college's Promotion and Tenure Committee and the faculty of the Department of Pharmacy Practice unanimously supported Edwards for the honor. "Dr. Edwards has clearly had a distinguished career at Wayne State University in the areas of scholarship, teaching and services," said Richard L. Slaughter, associate dean for pharmacy. " His career highlights include one of the only members of the editorial board of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics with a PharmD degree, co-author with me on the book 'Evaluating drug literature: A statistical approach,' and holder of a U.S. Patent. He is cited in literature more than 2,000 times and has five manuscripts with more than 100 citations. Pharmacy students have awarded him Instructor of the Year 11 times."

Initiating the recommendation for emeritus status, Jesse C. Vivian, professor in Pharmacy Practice, said, "Dr. Edwards' dedication to Wayne State University, the college and the profession of pharmacy is noteworthy and of the highest quality since he joined the college in 1983 as an assistant professor. His prestige among his peers, the students he has taught and colleagues in global academia is beyond reproach."

A native of Canada, Edwards presently serves as Hallman director and associate dean for pharmacy at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
