PET Inventor Lectures at 7th Annual Research Forum

The inventor of the Positron Emission Tomography scanner, better known by its acronym PET, will be the guest lecturer at the 7th Annual Research Forum, Oct. 6. Michael Phelps, PhD, will speak on the "Integration of PET molecular imaging diagnostics and molecular therapeutics: From discovery and development to managing the care of patients."

The Research Forum is sponsored by the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences(EACPHS), Wayne State University, and presents the research of students in the pharmacy and health sciences programs.

The forum begins at 11 a.m. in the EACPHS auditorium with Dr. Phelps speaking at 11:15 a.m. The poster presentations are planned from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Commons of the College.

All are welcomed to Dr. Phelps' lecture. There is no charge. The College is located on the southwest corner of the Detroit Medical Center. Entrance to the building is on Brady Street at John R, across from the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.

Dr. Phelps is a Norton Simon Professor; chair of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology; and director, Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMED) and the Crump Institute of Molecular Imaging at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). With colleagues Simon Cherry and Arion Chatziioannou, he developed a miniaturized pre-clinical PET scanner (microPET). Dr. Phelps along with his UCLA colleagues and students has developed numerous in vivo assays for PET that measure biological processes ranging from gene expression and signal transduction to rates of various biochemical reactions.
