Three Health Sciences Faculty Recognized for Outstanding Service

The Women of Wayne Alumni Association recognized three of our own faculty for outstanding achievement in health sciences education, Nov. 3.

Honored were Stephanie Gilkey, MS PA-C, of Physician Assistant Studies (PAS); Doreen Y. Head, PhD, MS, OTR, of Occupational Therapy (OT); and Susan Ann Talley, DPT, MA, PT, of Physical Therapy (PT). The women were among four faculty to be recognized.

Gilkey served on the task force that developed and implemented in 1996 the PAS program. Joining the faculty in 1997, she became PAS program director in 2005. Gilkey has lead students in projects for Detroit Public School children, after school tutoring, health fairs, and classroom health presentations. Her involvement in Special Olympics led to a collaboration between PAS, PT and OT students to provide more than 95 percent of pre-sport health appraisals for Detroit Special Olympians yearly. She earned national Innovations in Health Care Awards in 2000 and again in 2001 from the American Academy of Physician Assistants/PA Foundation/Pfizer Recognition Program for "Childhood Immunizations" and the "Health Appraisals for Special Olympics Detroit Athletes." A certified physician assistant, Gilkey earned her bachelor and master's degrees from Mercy College/University of Detroit Mercy.

Joining EACPHS as part-time faculty in 1995, Head became an OT assistant professor in August 2001 and OT program director in October 2008. In addition to serving on OT and WSU service/academic committees, she received the EACPHS Awardf for Teaching Excellence in 1999 and the Detroit District of Occupational Therapy Association Peer Recognition 1998-1999. Head earned an associate degree in Occupational Therapy from Wayne County Community College, 1979; a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Eastern Michigan University, 1987; and a Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy in 1996.

Talley became a PT faculty member in 1980. She served as director of clinical education for 10 years prior to her appointment as director of the PT program in 2004. She was honored with the College Prism Award for Innovative Teaching in 2009 for her work integrating service learning into teaching. During her tenure as PT director, she has developed three new research labs, infusing approximately $1 million into the program research infrastructure. Talley graduated from the WSU Physical Therapy program in 1976 and received her master's degree in Human Development and Relationships in 1982 also from Wayne State. She earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Creighton University in 2005 and is currently in the WSU graduate program in Educational Evaluation and Research.
