Tips from CAPS: Cool the flames of burnout

By Estenia Elisevich, MSW Intern

With the semester in full swing, we may fall into study habits that lead to burnout. Burnout is when we load on a lot of stressful tasks without incorporating moments to recharge and rest. Burnout can lead to physical symptoms of exhaustion and lasting consequences to the body and mind.illustration of a person with their head on the desk

If you aren't sure if you're experiencing burnout, here are some signs to look out for:

  • Change in sleep patterns
  • Feeling overly critical or negative
  • Constantly exhausted
  • Becoming physically ill
  • Feeling anxious
  • Neglecting self-care
  • Loss in motivation
  • If you recognize some signs of burnout, not to worry! There are antidotes you can implement to cool the flames of burnout, such as:

  • Get enough sleep
  • Implement rituals (meditation, journaling, positive self-talk)
  • Connect with people you love
  • Hydrate
  • Fuel up with healthy food options
  • Set boundaries
  • Prioritize moments of fun (even if brief)
  • Schedule time to rest
  • Focus on organization
