Eugene Applebaum PharmD Leadership & Scholars Program announces second cohort
Wayne State University alumnus and college namesake Eugene Applebaum '60, '98 was a role model for innovation and leadership, inspiring student pharmacists to excel in the profession and give back to the community. As part of its Applebaum Fellows Program, Applebaum Family Philanthropy is supporting the second cohort of the Eugene Applebaum PharmD Leadership & Scholars program, whose members will engage in a transformative leadership skills and project development program to advance community-ambulatory pharmacy practice.
Four third-year student pharmacists - Jacqueline Feist, Rola Hariri, Hassan Khatib and Lauren Krumm - have been selected as the 2020-22 cohort of the Eugene Applebaum PharmD Leadership & Scholars Program. Each will receive a $4,000 scholarship - as well as a $2,000 budget to complete a project that will advance community-ambulatory pharmacy.
The project is the cornerstone of the program. The scholars will work in teams to to develop ideas to enhance a pharmacy service from concept to execution. The first cohort, David Gutenschwager and Tara Orzechowski, whose project spans 2019-21, is researching and implementing a medical and medication history process that includes a form to be completed by patients onsite at community pharmacies, giving their pharmacists a much deeper understanding of the patient's health over the long term. Their ultimate goal is to help community pharmacists provide more effective and safe medication advice and oversight.
"Access to a much more complete long-term medical and medication history that Davey and Tara are developing has been missing from community pharmacy practice," said Associate Dean for Pharmacy Rich Lucarotti. "This a novel, entrepreneurial project, which includes use of an electronic tablet, which Eugene Applebaum — a pioneering entrepreneur in community pharmacy — would be proud. I am looking forward to working with the second cohort on an equally impactful project they design."
