MLS, PAS team up for interprofessional education experience
On April 5, Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science undergrads and Physician Assistant Studies master's students participated in an interprofessional education event in the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, led by clinical faculty members MaryAnne Stewart, Courtney Doty and Ronette Chojnacki.
Two case studies were presented to all the students based on situations that can occur in the clinical setting: One involved a patient with a urinary tract infection needing a urinalysis test, and the other involved a patient with a sore throat requiring a throat sample to rule out a Strep A infection.
Students were placed in groups to discuss, perform the tests needed and answered questions as to what PAS and MLS professionals would do in these situations.
Participating in the experience were 15 MLS students from the junior cohort and approximately 45 PAS students.
